On the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, bamboo reaches the size of fully grown trees, and bamboo thickets become true bamboo forests. One of the most famous of these forests in Korea is located in Damyang.

Step onto the path and the temperature drops a few degrees. Sunlight filters through the canopy of stalks and the whole grove glows a soft green.
Stop for a moment and listen. Bamboo creaks and rustles in the breeze, a sound Korean poets have long associated with calm and integrity.
Walk slowly along the shaded lanes, look up along the stalks to the sky, and let the pace of the day settle.
