Gyeongpo Lake, whose name translates as "Lake with a Mirror Surface", is an unusual natural formation. It appeared as a result of overlapping sand deposits of the bay of the East Sea. As a result of the accumulation of silt and sand, it gradually decreased to its present size (formerly Gyeongpoho was 12 km across; now it is about 1.7 km long, 800 m wide).

The lake itself and its surroundings are covered with legends: the Hwarangs of Silla times admired its shores; Confucian men of the Joseon era liked to spend time here; here is the famous Gyeongpo Dae Scenic Pavilion, originally built in 1326 (the modern building is also of respectable age - it was erected in 1745).

The Gyeongpoho area is one of the most famous places for admiring cherry blossoms: a picturesque alley goes around the shores of the lake. And in 2018, during the Olympic Games, hockey, short track, and figure skating competitions were held at several stadiums built almost on the shore of the lake.
